Class Gift Exchange

We did this last year and the kids loved it ALL YEAR LONG!!

They each came with a wrapped gift for the class: a book, a game, etc. We sat in a circle and played an exchange game and then one at a time, they opened a gift. we used them for the rest of the year!

The gift can be new or used, and as creative as you’d like! What do you think??

I’m thinking $10-15

Busy Bees Tees

The shirts are ordered and Shelby Segura will get them made as soon as they come in!

We are so excited!!

Coming Home Friday

Phonics Packet: Long A (a_e)

This week we focused on the long A spelled a_e, but we also touched on -ay, -eigh, -a, -ai

Take a look to see what your kids are working on:

Continue with Verbs as action words; add -ing

Continue with Nouns: singular and plural nouns; irregular plural nouns; possessive nouns, proper and common nouns

Continue with contractions, with the focus on “not”

Spelling Test

Spelling Tests taken today were sent home…Please check your child’s folder. All the kids did great!!

In class, we say, “We all make mistakes because we are trying!” If your child gets words wrong, please know that we focus on the effort! One of our goals is to learn the process of taking a spelling test and all of the kids are doing great!

A Glimpse into Our Class

Science

We have two THRIVING class plants! We planted “Forget Me Nots” from seed and they are tiny little buds! Our class plant is also healthy…the kids are enjoying both!

Social Studies

We began comparing winter holidays around the world. It has been interesting to discover that most holidays in late November/December focus on lights and festivals of lights. The kids are devouring the information! And I have enjoyed hearing about the amazing things you do at home!

Writing Notebooks

This week was so fun! We surveyed the class: I like candy canes/I don’t like candy canes. We worked on verbs by writing what we like to do in a big long list with commas. We have a very talented class!

Math Topic 6: Represent and Interpret Data

After Topic 5, this has been a welcomed change! We are taking surveys, organizing data, and creating truths about the data. The kids are even coming up with equations about the data! They are feeling successful and having fun!

Topic 5 Test was TODAY!! All the kids were here so I walked them through it and gave them hints so they could think through some of the tough problems. We will keep practicing!

Noetic Math

Mrs. Merkuri is still volunteering on Mondays to work with this group of first grade mathematicians on Noetic Math. This is a math contest twice a year for grades 2-8. The kids will take a written test on November 17th in my classroom. What a great opportunity for math enrichment, practice, and fun!

XtraMath at Home!

Try it! If they earn a certificate, let me know and I will set them up for the next group of math problems.

We will celebrate in class!!

Literacy Pro at Home!

I am still learning this and trying to navigate it! Thank you for your patience!

Log in to Literacy Pro! Let me know how the kids like it…my own children really enjoy it!

This is our new online reading program that you paid for when you purchased the RASK kit. It is super cool! My own kids just started using it. The first step is to take an assessment and then the program will suggest books for your child. Please take time to login and check it out. I would love to have them reading even more over the break!

At LiteracyPro, kids can “access over 2,500 authentic, high-quality ebooks, some in Spanish, as well as connections to thousands of print books in classroom libraries. Students are given a personalized reading experience with choice, while educators are provided with actionable data about reading levels, activity, comprehension, and progress.”

Instructions: Go to https://digital.scholastic.com/#/signin

Choose “Sign in with Google Classroom”

Choose your child’s account: firstinitiallastname@santancharterschool.com

It will guide you through the rest! Please let me know how it goes! My own kids love it so far!

*To My Parents of Above Grade Level Learners:

These pages may not seem challenging enough for your kids! Rest assured, in class, we do a lot of enrichment activities and extensions! For example, the book at the end of the /i/ packet has very few words for beginning first grade level readers. One extension idea would be to add more detail to the sentences, like descriptive words or an addition at the end of the sentence.

For math, our discussions are deep and the activities and games that we play can be more challenging!

Library on Fridays!

Please send in your child’s library book on Fridays or before. They will be choosing a new book when they return the book from last week.

Parents at School!

This link is through December. We LOVE having parents on campus!!

Art Masterpiece

Art Masterpiece was today. You will get to enjoy your child’s winter scene at the Christmas Concert!

Let Jenn or I know if you would like to volunteer to help. If you have any questions or ideas, contact Jenn Jacobs.  Jenn Jacobs @ jbatzinger@gmail.com to volunteer or for more information!

Letter from the Principal

Dear San Tan Families,

I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend. I know mine was filled with family time. I really want to thank everyone who came to and made Charlie Brown Thanksgiving happen. It made my heart so full to see everyone come together outside of the classrooms.

Believe it or not, reenrollment for the 2022-2023 school year is beginning to roll out this week. This year we will be focusing on paper packets and the Online Registration forms through Infinite Campus. We will have very specific instructions for reenrollment in an additional email come out later this week. Please begin checking your student’s backpack for paper packets starting after the email goes out.

Thank you!
