Coming Home Today!
American Symbols and Freedom
Although it has been 20 years since 9/11, we spoke only briefly about that day in class. Instead, we spent time each day learning about American symbols: our flag, the Liberty Bell, the bald eagle, and the Statue of Liberty. Your first graders were so excited! They are oozing with patriotism!! Within our many discussions, we talked about soldiers and how people have been serving our country since George Washington! With that, I would like to personally thank all families who serve or have a loved one that serves. I am truly grateful for your sacrifice to protect us and our freedom!
Vowel Packet: Consonant Blends: bl/cl/fl/gl/pl
Again, our packet may have some pages that we did not get to this week so it is coming home. This is a great opportunity for you to see what we do in class AND to give your student extra practice!
Math Test (I will send this home next week!)
We finished Topic 2 and took the test on Thursday. The kids did pretty well! I will send the test home next week. I read each question out loud and we ended on #16. They will get credit for the procedure and the answer.
Keep Practicing from the High Frequency Word List (HFW)
This is a list of all of the HFW we work on until Fall Break. We have introduced all up through “very”. Read/Write/Find these words in print to practice!
*To My Parents of Above Grade Level Learners:
These pages may not seem challenging enough for your kids! Rest assured, in class, we do a lot of enrichment activities and extensions! For example, the book at the end of the /i/ packet has very few words for beginning first grade level readers. One extension idea would be to add more detail to the sentences, like descriptive words or an addition at the end of the sentence.
For math, our discussions are deep and the activities and games that we play can be more challenging!

Books, Books, and More Books!
I was told today that because of the amount of books sold during our book fair, I could make a wish list and get some of my books paid for! I am so grateful to all of you who participated in both the UsBorne Book Fair on campus and the Scholastic Book Club order last week. Both allow me to add books to our class library!!
If your student wants a particular book added to our class library, let me know!!
